L Triangles

L Triangles: I was struck with inspiration today. I was looking through the first volume of Death Note, especially adoring the drawings of L. On drawing really caught my attention. Because of how his body was folded in the crouch and the interplay of negative space with his form, I realized "He's a bunch of triangles". Excited, I broke him down into his shapes and then built him up from those shapes into his full form. This just goes to show that no subject is so complex that it can't be broken down into a simple process of building off of shapes.

Tools: Pencil, Crayola Twistable colored pencils, and a Sharpie ultra fine tip pen.

(Belated) Wildcard Wednesday #56

This week, we can expect: lots more Chess stuff! And a little drawing of L because Death Note is amazing.
(So sorry I forgot to post on time-had a really busy day at work)

chess, black, white, king, concept art, sketches, doodles

Chess #29: As I've been giving the Chess concept and world a full development and makeover, I'm revisiting the kings. They need to be more distinct from each other and have more character to them.
This is your first glimpse of the Black King, who now has a name - Alistair.

Chess #30: Another glimpse of King Alistair. A playful, optimistic king, he is very skilled with the game and an enthusiastic risk taker.

Chess #31: A first glimpse at the White King, Edward. Way back in the day, the kings looked very similar to each other - their only differences being black and white, dark haired and light haired. But in order to give them each their own character and make them distinct, I've added more to their characters. Alistair is British Japanese, and his character traits were listed above. Edward is British, but he's a rough, cunning bloke who's determined to succeed. While Alistair's my favorite, Edward is going to be the most fun to draw as far as expressions go.

Death Note, L, fan art, manga, anime, sketches

L #1: Another drawing of L! (And I'm going to start numbering them because I have the feeling I'll be drawing him quite often) This time I tried drawing him in my own style. It's kind of hard to break away from the manga/anime look, but this time around, I think I finally got something satisfactory.

Wildcard Wednesday #40

Today we can expect: the classic bouncing ball exercise, my midterms print, and a little more L in the picture!

Bouncing Ball: The bouncing ball...what animator hasn't done this exercise at some point in their life? The trick in class was while we drew the bouncing ball from a one point perspective, the version we ended up shooting was actually another version of the ball, only angled and bouncing off into the distance. It's hard not to make the ball too small when you've still got so many frames to go.

chess, black, white, bishop, pawn, knight, digital art, concept art

Chess - Turmoil in the Tunnels: Here is my Chess-themed midterms print. Like I said earlier, I have no idea what exactly the scenario going on here is, but nonetheless I drew it.
You may be wondering why I'm not saving the print itself for Saturday. Well that's because I've got an image traced version (through Illustrator) to show you later, and it looks really awesome!

Death Note, anime, L, fan art, digital art

L Lawliet: After finishing and printing out the previous piece, I had two hours worth of class time to do whatever the heck I wanted. So of course I drew L. I think I'm starting to get better and better the more I draw him. And while I've got a basic understanding of drawing in the manga/anime style, I'm not the greatest manga artist in the world, so I'm pretty proud of the job I did.

Lament

Death Note, L, fan art, anime

Lament: I decided to kick back with a little more fan art this week, so I thought I'd do a reaction piece to a certain favorite character's...fate. Ugh.
I knew it was coming. I accidentally spoiled it for myself years ago, long before I ever thought I'd watch the anime. And I ended up with a delayed reaction that had me crying late in the night. I'm such trash, aren't I?
Anyways...

Tools: Pencil (tracing) and Prismacolor illustrator pens.

Wildcard Wednesday #38

This week, we can expect: a new animation and an eccentric detective.

Slava the Shade: This week in animation class, we did a group project, involving a transforming object being shared around by various characters. For my bit, I pulled out a character I created in storyboard class - Slava the Shade.

Death Note, L, anime, manga, fan art

L: My brother and I have been binging Death Note (our first time seeing it), and I have been having so much fun with this series. Anime is very different, so I'm still getting used to it. Death Note has been the first show that I've really consumed with fervor.
As you can guess by the drawing, L is already one of my favorite characters. I have a thing for intelligent, clever characters in fiction. I drew him during animation class when the group project was taking a while and I was trying to keep myself awake for the nightly trek back home.
