Pitch Black Animation

Pitch Black: Short little test animation I made this week. I was in the mood for animating one of my favorite animated villains.
(I'm going to be moving over from Photoshop to Flash, or Animate, for future animations)

Tools: Photoshop.

(Belated) Wildcard Wednesday #24

This week, we can expect a little Arlecchino with a lot of nightmares.
(I'm so sorry I forgot to post yesterday! School started back up this week, and while it's been an incredible experience, it's been so crazy on top of everything else I've got going on my plate)

Arlecchino!, commedia dell'arte, humor, concept art, sketches

Arlecchino #10: Some more body language/rough sketches, featuring Arlecchino and Columbina.

The Nightmare, Henry Fuseli, painting, Rise of the Guardians, Pitch Black, sketches

Nightmare #1: Most of you are probably familiar with Henry Fuseli's famous painting The Nightmare. If you're not, look it up-it's one of the most chilling pieces of art. It catches a woman in the heat of a nightmare, with an incubus pressing on her chest and a horse peeking through the curtains. Anyways, while I was looking at it, I was thinking about Rise of the Guardians, and I wondered, wouldn't it be cool to have Pitch Black, the King of Nightmares, in the picture? So this is one of the first practice sketches before I get the finished product up (hoping to make it in Photoshop if I can learn more about the brush and paint settings).

The Nightmare, Henry Fuseli, painting, Rise of the Guardians, Pitch Black, sketches

Nightmare #2: Another practice sketch for the Nightmare-inspired piece I have in mind. This one's just playing around with Pitch Black's positioning over the sleeping lady (since in the original, the incubus was sitting on her chest-works fine for a small demon, but not so much for Pitch).

Wildcard Wednesday #23

This week, we can expect: a whole lot of Arlecchino (with a touch of Rise of the Guardians to welcome the holidays)

Arlecchino!, commedia dell'arte, humor, character design, concept art, sketches

Arlecchino #7: Some experimenting with body movement and positions on characters such as Arlecchino or Brighella, an inamorata, Pedrolino, and Capitano. In commedia dell'arte, there are very set movements and positions for each character. Working on that now will add character to the drawings, and later on to the animation.

Arlecchino!, commedia dell'arte, humor, character design, concept art, sketches

Arlecchino #8: Playing around with one of the servants, Columbina. I've ultimately decided to keep her usually unmasked (since most women in commedia dell'arte didn't wear masks), but for scenarios where she disguises herself, I have created a mask that will work well with the expressions on her face.
To the right of her is Vittora. She can be either an inamorata or a servant, and in my story's case, I'm making her another servant - she's like Cosette, and I'm planning on paring her up with Pierrot later.

Arlecchino #9: More character sketches. On the left is Arlecchino with friend and fellow servant Pedrolino (still playing around with his design). On the right is Vittora and Pierrot meeting each other mid errand.

Rise of the Guardians #1: Recently introduced a friend of mine to Rise of the Guardians, which made me remember my own love for this film and everything about it. The Tooth Fairy's face is really awkward to draw, by the way!

Wildcard Wednesday #16

Hi, M³ here! This week, we can expect: a company out for a goddess's blood, Eleven doing incredible stuff with her mind, while Kanzaki and Suga watch in in awe and Jack Frost sets in.

Kill the Goddess!, concept art

Kill the Goddess! Cover Concept: This is just a little cover idea from my school sketchbook. I'll probably preview Kill the Goddess! as a graphic novel/web comic series before I can finally animate it, so this is just one concept for that particular version of the project.

Stranger Things, Eleven, fan art

Stranger Things-Eleven: Stranger Things is one of my top favorite shows ever! I finished it in two days and binge-watched it twice with friends, and I'm definitely watching it again before season two comes out. In the midst of all my heavy homework, I didn't get a chance to do any fan art for this, but now there'll be lots more where this came from (Eleven is such a beast!). This is also a work in progress, as you can tell by the inked in eyes.

Forest of Drizzling Rain, Kirisame, RPG horror, Kanzaki, Shiori

FODR-Kanzaki WIP: Last week I introduced myself to an RPG horror gem, Forest of Drizzling Rain (or Kirisame), and I love it! (Plot in a nutshell: when Kanzaki's parents die, she goes off to learn about her outer family, but comes across horror and forgotten memories involving a vengeful ghost. It's a spooky, touching game-check it out!) I'll also start doing some fan art for this, plus it'll be a good excuse to bring my manga drawing skills back to shape. Hand trace in Illustrator based off of physical sketch.

Forest of Drizzling Rain, Kirisame, RPG horror, Suga

FODR-Suga WIP: This is the other main character from Forest of Drizzling Rain, Suga. He is such an awesome, lonely character. He is the manager of the family mansion Kanzaki goes to visit, and a whole lot more.....to say anything else about his character would be full of spoilers! Also a hand trace in Illustrator based off of a physical sketch.

Rise of the Guardians, Jack Frost, Dreamworks, animation

Jack Frost: Here in Nebraska we've got our first freeze warning, so to welcome the frost, what better way than with a sketch of this guy? (sketched either last year or earlier this year) Rise of the Guardians is one of the two Dreamworks movies I actually like (the other being the underrated Megamind), and Jack Frost is one of my favorite animated characters of all time. He and this movie were also the final push I needed to realize how much I wanted to go into animation.

Coraline vs. Pitch Black V1.0

Coraline vs. Pitch Black V1.0: Coraline managed to escape the clutches of the Other Mother and brave her twisted world. But when she stumbles upon the portal to Pitch Black's dark world, how will she fare against the man behind all the nightmares of the world?

Coraline, Pitch Black, Rise of the Guardians, animation, fanart

Inspiration: Coraline is one of my favorite animated heroines of all time. I can't stop thinking about the movie ever since I saw it a couple months back. Whilst daydreaming, I thought, "If Coraline did so well against the Other Mother, how would she do against Pitch Black?" So I drew this little sketch.
It's version 1.0 because I want to do a better drawing of it sometime soon.
(Just realized I forgot to upload the would-be Wildcard Wednesday art with today's post! So I guess there will be a Wildcard Wednesday next week, it just won't be new)

Tools: Pencil (outlining), Prismacolor pens, Tombow grayscale markers, and Faber-Castell markers.

Pitch Black

Pitch Black: He thrives in the shadows. He feeds on your deepest fears. He is Pitch Black-administering nightmares to all the world's children since the beginning of time.

Pitch Black, Rise of the Guardians, Dreamworks, animation

Inspiration: Rise of the Guardians by Dreamworks Animation is one of my favorite animated movies ever. And Pitch Black ranks among my top favorite animated villains. His abilities to manipulate shadows are amazing, and his design is one that inspires both fear and appeal. He looks like he walked out of a German Expressionistic film.
This was another experimentation I've had with my set of grayscale markers. Last time I tried with blending and gradients was with a Miraculous Ladybug drawing on Chat Noir, ending up with a mixed result. This attempt was better, but gah! Gradients are not my thing at all. Also I hate drawing nightmare sand.

Tools: Pencil (outlining), Prismacolor pens, Tombow grayscale markers, and one silver Infinity permanent marker.
